Water testing
Volunteers participate in the following assessments.
- Chemical assessment: measuring dissolved oxygen,
nitrates, phosphates (and also pH, temperature, turbidity).
- Biological assessment: looking for the macro
invertebrates that are indicators of the degree of
purity (or pollution) of water (for instance the presence of
mayfly larvae indicates that the water is very clean).
- River assessment (stream walking): following a stream
or the shoreline of a lake , and taking records of features and
disturbances (fauna, flora, erosion, signs of pollution, etc.).
- The partnership as well as many other groups in New Jersey
send the results to the NJ DEP.
We are currently seeking more participants (no
previous experience is required; training and equipment are provided).

The Great Annual Farrington Lake Cleanup - Every
Spring -Scout groups, youth clubs, boys and girls, young and
old, associations, join us to pick up
trash accumulated around the lake and restore its
natural beauty!
The project has a great educational value; we encourage
every school, every club to send a small crew of enthusiastic
volunteers.
Four municipalities support us by providing bags, huge
containers and trucks. Local media report
the event. |

GIS, GPS Technologies
We currently use GIS (Geographic Information
System) technology to generate and customize maps from a
computerized atlas on CDs.
We plan to use GPS (Global Positioning
System) technology to determine accurately
in the field the coordinates of sites with problems or sites
with other special interest. Current coordinates can be easily
read on a hand-held device that communicates with multiple satellites

Storm drain marking
![]() |
Storm drains connected to the river system are being
marked with a plaque ( or with the stenciled picture of a fish).
This sign is a reminder that objects and fluids, such as
paint, engine oil, gasoline, lawn chemicals, swimming
pool chemicals, that are dumped into this drain may have
an adverse effect on the water quality, its wildlife
(including fish), and importantly, its ability to to become
drinking water. The storm drains are designed to collect
only water from rain and snow. Dumping anything else is illegal and
may be harmful to people's health. Do not dump pet waste in
storm drains; place it with the garbage. |

Nature Center Project
- The partnership is planning to create a Nature Center, which
will include exhibit space, office space, classroom, and a small
laboratory to conduct additional biological and chemical testing. We
are in the process of applying for grants to finance this great
educational project.
- The LBWP had the great privilege to received, as a donation,
a large collection of naturalized birds; this exceptional collection
is the largest in New Jersey; it will be proudly displayed in
our future nature center.
